What is a solar power plant (PV) and how does it work?

A solar power plant converts sunlight directly into electricity via photovoltaic (PV) panels. Panels generate direct current (DC); an inverter converts this into the alternating current (AC) used by your facility and the grid. The energy is first used for your own consumption, and any surplus is fed to the grid according to net-metering rules. A PV plant consists of modules, mounting structures, inverter(s), AC/DC panels, metering and protection equipment.

What is the difference between rooftop and ground-mount PV?

A rooftop PV system is installed on an existing building roof (home, factory, commercial facility); it requires no extra land, targets self-consumption and usually pays back faster. A ground-mount plant is built on open land, typically at larger scale, and generally requires land allocation, a soil survey and a substation for grid connection. Which one suits you is determined by feasibility, based on your consumption profile, roof load capacity/land status and investment size.

What does turnkey (EPC) PV mean?

EPC (Engineering–Procurement–Construction) means the engineering, equipment procurement and on-site installation are carried out under a single contract by one responsible firm. In this model the investor avoids the burden of supplier coordination, technical risk and warranty tracking, works with a single point of contact, and gains fixed delivery time and budget predictability. At what scale can a PV plant be installed?

Installation is possible at every scale — from a few kWp on a home roof, to hundreds of kWp / several MWp on industrial roofs, to multi-megawatt ground-mount plants. Ventira serves residential (5–50 kWp), commercial & industrial (50 kWp–5 MWp) and utility-scale (1 MWp+) projects. The right scale is determined by your roof/land area, contracted connection power and annual consumption.

Cost, Incentives & Return

How long does a PV investment take to pay back?

The payback period depends on the site's solar yield, self-consumption ratio, electricity purchase tariff and system cost. In a facility with a high self-consumption ratio (high daytime consumption), the return is noticeably shorter than in one with low self-consumption. The exact period is determined by a feasibility study prepared for your consumption profile, calculating NPV, IRR, LCOE and payback time. The plant's economic life exceeds 25 years.

What determines the cost of a PV investment?

Cost depends on items such as installed capacity (kWp), roof/land type and structure, panel and inverter selection, mounting structure, cabling and electrical infrastructure, and grid connection (a transformer if required). For this reason, a project-specific quote prepared after a site survey is essential rather than a single "per square metre" or "per kW" price. Because Ventira works independently of any brand or supplier, it recommends only the most suitable technical solution for your project — targeting the best cost-performance, not merely the cheapest.

Are there government incentives or tax advantages for PV?

Supports such as VAT exemption and customs duty exemption under an investment incentive certificate, along with periodically opened SME / green transformation support programmes, may apply. Since the scope and conditions of these supports change over time, it is best to evaluate the current situation together. Correct technical documentation and feasibility are required to benefit from these supports; Ventira also prepares the technical documents needed for the incentive application.

Can I sell surplus energy to the grid?

Yes. Under the unlicensed generation regulation, generation exceeding your instantaneous consumption is fed to the grid and assessed according to net-metering/sale rules. However, sale limits and pricing changed with the hourly netting regulation that took effect in 2026: the generation eligible for paid sale is limited to twice the previous year's consumption, and generation exceeding this limit is transferred to YEKDEM free of charge. To calculate the return correctly, your consumption and pricing profile must be analysed.

Regulation, Approvals & Netting

Which approvals and permits are required, and in what order?

A typical approval flow in the unlicensed PV process is as follows: (1) A connection application is made to the relevant distribution company (EDAŞ/TEDAŞ) and, if approved, a call letter (çağrı mektubu) is issued. (2) The electrical project and the structural (load-bearing) project for the roof/mounting are prepared and approved. (3) A suitability letter is obtained from the authority empowered for zoning/building permits (e.g. the municipality). (4) The connection agreement is signed with the relevant EDAŞ/TEDAŞ. (5) Installation (mounting and electrical works) is completed. (6) Acceptance procedures are carried out and the system is energised. What is hourly netting, and how does it differ from the monthly system?

In the old (monthly) system, the total energy generated over a month was netted in one step against the total energy consumed that month. In the new system each hour is assessed separately: the energy generated in a given hour is matched only with the energy consumed in that same hour. Surplus generation at midday becomes subject to sale at the relevant tariff; evening consumption (when there is no generation) cannot benefit from netting. Therefore, the hourly overlap of generation and consumption, and correct system sizing, have become critical.

Does hourly netting affect my investment?

Residential (household) subscribers are not affected by this change; household rooftop PV systems continue to be subject to monthly netting regardless of installed power. Commercial and industrial rooftop PV systems and ground-mount PV plants, however, fall within the scope of hourly netting. In this segment, facilities with high daytime consumption benefit the most; for businesses whose consumption drops outside working hours, integrating battery storage (BESS) to cover evening consumption becomes increasingly meaningful.

What is the paid-generation limit?

In the new application, the generation that can be sold to the grid for payment is limited to twice the previous year's consumption. After the netted amount is deducted from this limit, the remainder can be sold; generation exceeding the limit is transferred to YEKDEM free of charge. For this reason the system should be carefully sized to consumption data, so as not to create idle generation by building it larger than necessary.

Do I need a licence?

Systems based on self-consumption and within the connection (contracted) power limits are installed under "unlicensed electricity generation" and do not require a separate generation licence. Nonetheless, formal processes such as the connection application, project approvals and the connection agreement must be completed. Your connection power and the maximum capacity that can be installed are determined by your meter/subscription setup and the distribution company's capacity situation; we assess this on your behalf before the application.

Technical, Installation & Maintenance

Is my roof suitable for PV installation?

This is determined by an engineering assessment carried out before installation. The main criteria are: the roof's load-bearing capacity (structural adequacy under added panels, structure, snow and wind loads), roof type and covering (sandwich panel, trapezoidal sheet, membrane, tile), tilt and orientation (south is the most efficient orientation in our country), surrounding shading elements, and the usable net area. Installation on a structurally inadequate roof can cause both structural damage and safety risk. With a free preliminary survey we can determine your roof's suitability and approximate capacity.

How long do panels last, and does output decline over time?

Quality photovoltaic panels typically generate for 25–30 years. Panels experience a natural performance decline (degradation) of roughly 0.4–0.5% per year; manufacturers therefore usually offer a linear performance warranty guaranteeing about 85% of the initial power at the end of year 25. Inverters have a shorter life (typically 10–15 years), and their warranties can be extended when needed. Maintaining the expected output depends on regular maintenance (O&M).

Why is PV maintenance (O&M) necessary, and what does it cover?

An unmaintained plant can lose a significant portion of its annual output due to soiling, shading, hot spots and inverter faults — a loss that often exceeds the cost of a maintenance contract. In line with IEC 62446 (maintenance, testing and inspection) and IEC 61724 (performance monitoring), Ventira provides thermographic (IR) module scanning, electrical tests (Voc/Isc, insulation resistance Riso, I-V curve), inverter and panel checks, connection torque checks, panel cleaning and remote performance ratio (PR) monitoring.

Does it make sense to add a battery (BESS)?

In the hourly-netting era, battery energy storage systems (BESS) — used to store surplus daytime generation for evening use — are becoming increasingly meaningful. BESS provides benefits such as self-consumption optimisation, peak (expensive-hour) management and backup of critical loads during grid outages. Your new or existing PV system can be made storage-ready with a hybrid inverter setup, so you can later expand it by simply adding a battery module. Its feasibility is evaluated according to your consumption profile and electricity tariff.

Does PV keep generating during a grid outage?

Standard grid-connected (on-grid) systems automatically shut down during an outage for the safety of personnel working on the grid (anti-islanding protection). If you also want electricity during an outage, a battery-backed hybrid or backup (off-grid-supported) system is required. We can design this solution according to the critical loads you want to back up.
